Rilling Conducts Free Concert Oct 31

September 22, 2004

Helmuth Rilling, our Grammy-winning artistic director and favorite Bach expert, makes a rare off-season appearance in Eugene October 31, conducting a free performance of Bach’s Magnificat and Mozart’s Mass in C Minor at 3:00 p.m. in Eugene’s Hult Center.

The concert concludes his residence at the University of Oregon School of Music October 26-31 as a Robert M. Trotter Visiting Professor.

Helmuth will give master classes and rehearse UO music students during his residency. In the concert, he will conduct three of the School of Music’s premier ensembles. The University Singers and Chamber Choir will combine to make the chorus, along with the University Symphony. The concert is open to the public via general admission. No tickets are needed. The lobby will open at 2 pm and Silva Hall will open at 2:30.

Rilling will also give a Student Forum lecture on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach at 1 p.m. in Beall Hall on Thursday, October 28. The Student Forum is free and open to the public.

The Oregon Bach Festival is a program of the University of Oregon. In 1999 Rilling received the school’s highest distinction, an honorary doctoral degree—one of only three ever bestowed by the institution.
