Conducting Master Class Accepting Apps

January 12, 2007

Applications are now being accepted for the Master Class in Choral-Orchestral Conducting, June 28-July 15. The class is for professional conductors as well as leaders of church, university, high school, and community music organizations.

Focusing on the class repertoire of four J.S. Bach cantatas and Haydn’s Mass for Theresa, participants learn how text, music, symbolism, structure, and technique come together. Class members live and work alongside colleagues who care about artistic insight and furthering the choral-orchestral art form.

The class is also open to non-conducting auditors who get a first-chair look at how master teacher Helmuth Rilling and his staff prepare works for performance.

The class may be taken for University of Oregon credit.

Conducting participants attend days full of seminars and rehearsals and conduct the Festival orchestra, chorus and soloists under the direct supervision of Helmuth Rilling and Thomas Somerville. Non-conducting auditors attend all seminars, rehearsals, and attend performances and have the opportunity to interact with faculty, including this year’s Hinkle Distinguished Lecturer, theologian Martin Marty.

Application deadline for participants is March 4 and for auditors, June 1. For an application and more details, see the master class web pages or call for details, (800) 457-1486
