Lecture Reveals Social Role of Bach’s Wife

April 1, 2010

David Yearsley, Cornell University

Make a date with Anna Magdalena Bach when the University of Oregon’s annual German Studies Committee Lecture answers the question “What is a Sängerin? Anna Magdalena Bach, Coffee, and Musical Women in Enlightened Leipzig.”

Guest speaker David Yearsley of Cornell University addresses the topic Thursday, April 8 at 4 pm in the Knight Library Browsing Room.

A native of Seattle, Mr. Yearsley teaches European music culture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with particular emphasis on the music of Bach and Handel. A previous guest lecturer in the German Studies series, he is also an accomplished organist. He’ll participate in a series of concerts presented this weekend in Eugene by Cornell’s Westfield Center.

The lecture is free and open to the public. The Westfield Center and the International Society of Organ Builders sponsor the weekend organ concerts, which honor the work of organ builder John Brombaugh. Tickets are $10 and $8 (seniors and students) and are available at the door of each venue.
