40 years in one glorious night-the Anniversary Gala

On July 3 the chorus and orchestra sing Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven.

On July 3 at 8 pm, the Oregon Bach Festival sums up its first forty years with a gala anniversary concert that features more than 200 musicians and a variety of music from Bach to Broadway.

A multimedia history tour bridges the nine numbers of the program, with short videos reflecting on aspects of the Festival’s history.

Following the concert Trio Voronezh, which made its American debut at the 1996 OBF, performs for an open reception in the Hult Center lobby.

Tickets for the celebratory event are $59-$15. The program includes:

  • The Overture from Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 (Helmuth Rilling, conductor)
  • Grosser Herr, o starker König from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (featuring bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff and trumpeter Guy Few)
  • The Scherzo from the Mendelssohn Octet (OBF string principals led by Elizabeth Baker)
  • Concerto in D Minor for Two Pianos by Poulenc (Ya-Fei Chuang and Robert Levin, soloists; OBF Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Kahane)
  • Adagio from the Sinfonia Concertante by Mozart as reconstructed by Robert Levin (OBF wind soloists)
  • The Sanctus and Osanna from Bach’s B Minor Mass (OBF Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Helmuth Rilling)
  • How lovely is thy dwelling place from A German Requiem (OBF Chorus and Orchestra, with a video memoriam of key leaders, artists and donors)
  • Two songs by the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy conducted by Anton Armstrong,
  • The SFYCA with Bobby McFerrin, performing the improvisational Circlesongs.
  • Thomas Quasthoff singing and swinging They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Ol’ Man River (OBF orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Kahane)
  • Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy (Jeffrey Kahane, piano soloist; OBF Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Helmuth Rilling)
