Berlin Philharmonic Quintet launches CMB Oct 23

In the opening concert of the Chamber Music@Beall series, listeners will have the opportunity to hear rarely-performed music from an ensemble with a long-established pedigree.

The Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet is the first permanent wind quintet in the famous orchestra’s rich chamber music tradition. Founded in 1988 during the era of Herbert von Karajan, the ensemble has thrived under the productive and influential leadership of the orchestra’s most recent music directors, Sir Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado.

Its five players (four of whom are original members) regularly astonish audiences with their range of expression, tonal spectrum, and virtuosity. It’s uncommon to hear this instrumentation in concert—the Berliners are the first wind quintet on the series in more than three years—and rarer still to hear music performed at this high level.

The Quintet begins the Eugene program with an arrangement of one of Mozart’s playful works for mechanical organ, the “Clockwork Fantasy” arranged by flutist Michael Hasel.

From there follow works by a range of 20th century masters: Gyorgy Ligety (Hungary/Austria), Samuel Barber (America), Endre Szervansky (Hungary), and Carl Nielsen (Denmark). All are classical in spirit, with passages of beauty, lyricism, drama, and character. Nielsen’s work, the finale, completes the circle: it was written after the composer heard the Copenhagen Wind Quintet play Mozart.
