Marietta Simpson has sung with major orchestras throughout the United States and abroad. She made her Carnegie Hall debut as soloist in Brahms's Alto Rhapsody under Robert Shaw with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and her New York Philharmonic debut under Kurt Masur in Mendelssohn's Elijah. She has performed Szymanowski's Stabat Mater under Sir Simon Rattle with both the Vienna and Berlin philharmonics and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 under Daniel Barenboim with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Her 2009‒2010 season includes Mahler's Rückert Lieder with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Verdi's Requiem with the Louisville Orchestra; Messiah with the Cincinnati and Detroit symphony orchestras, Mendelssohn's Die erste Walpurgisnacht and Bach's St. Matthew Passion with the Alabama Symphony, and a recital at the Kennedy Center. Recent highlights include Hindemith's When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd (Cathedral Choral Society of Washington, D.C.), Bach's Cantata No. 78 and Christmas Oratorio (Baldwin-Wallace Bach Festival), Dominga de Adviento in Eötvös's Love and Other Demons (Glyndebourne Festival Opera, world première), Verdi's Requiem (Nashville Symphony), an evening of spirituals and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis (Singing City, Philadelphia), and Verdi's Requiem and Donald McCollough's Let My People Go (Master Chorale of Washington). She has performed Maria in Porgy and Bess with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, Opera Birmingham, and the Washington National Opera as well as in her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and on tour in concert performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Lorin Maazel.
