Anton Armstrong

Guest Artist

Since 1998 Anton Armstrong has served as the founding artistic director of the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy. He is the Harry R. and Thora H. Tosdal Professor of Music at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, and has been conductor of the St. Olaf Choir since 1990. Previously he served ten years on the faculty at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and conducted the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus. He is a graduate of St. Olaf College and earned a master of music degree at the University of Illinois and a doctor of musical arts degree from Michigan State University. He is the editor of a choral series for Earthsongs Publications and coeditor of the revised St. Olaf Choral Series for Augsburg Fortress Publishers. Armstrong is an award-winning teacher who is widely recognized for his work in youth and children's choral music. He has served on the summer faculty of the American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey, and currently serves on the national board of Chorus America. He is an active guest conductor and lecturer around the world and has conducted ensembles and appeared before regional, national, and international gatherings of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, Choristers Guild, American Guild of Organists, and the International Federation for Choral Music, for whom he will lead a conducting master class at the Ninth World Symposium of Choral Music in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, in August of this year. In October 2009 he received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Michigan State University.
