Young Korean tenor Yosep Kang began his voice studies in 1996 with Jea-Kwang Lyu at Sahmyook University in his hometown of Seoul. He continued his studies with Peter Maus at Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. He was a finalist in the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition, was awarded second prize at the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg, and won the Special Prize at the Francisco Vinas International Singing Competition in Barcelona. He started his career at the Cologne Opera Studio, where he accumulated his first stage experiences in such roles as Nathanael in The Tales of Hoffmann and The Singer in Der Rosenkavalier. In 20022003 Kang joined the Opera Studio of Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he sang Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor and Fenton in Falstaff. Kang joined Deutsche Oper Berlin as an ensemble member in fall 2003. Since making his debut as Tamino (The Magic Flute), he has performed Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor as well as The Singer in Der Rosenkavalier and has drawn praise for his appearances in such roles as Alfredo in La traviata. He has performed Count Almaviva (The Barber of Seville) in Schönbrunn Schlosstheater in Vienna, Nemorino (Der Liebestrank) in Görlitz, Ferrando (Così fan tutte) in Hannover, and Tamino in Stuttgart. After guesting with great success as Almaviva in Hannover, Kang sang this role at the Stuttgart State Opera and the Berlin State Opera. In May 2009 he sang Verdi's Requiem with the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Caracas in Venezuela, under the direction of Helmuth Rilling.
