Hercules returns from combat, bringing a beautiful princess home as a captive. His wife can't suppress her jealous thoughts, and she begins to devise a way to test his fidelity. When that test comes in the form of a poisonous gift from a centaur, her misguided intentions quickly turn fatal and lead to the downfall of a legend. Handel "playfully taunts" the listener (The New York Times), as he uses a mix of music and text to create a drama of epic proportions.
