Discovery Goldberg Seminar
Moderated by Hal Hinkle, this panel discussion aims to uncover intriguing perspectives from three artists with deep personal experience of the great Bach keyboard work.
Pianist Angela Hewitt has played the Goldberg Variations thousands of times since age 16 and she is known worldwide for her performance and interpretation of Bach on the piano.
Matthew Halls, the Oregon Bach Festival’s Artistic Director Designate, is founding director of the UK’s Retrospect Ensemble, period-performance specialists. His Goldberg Variations CD on Linn Records earned an “outstanding” ranking from International Record Review.
Music theorist Tim Smith is the author of this site’s interactive components. Its exploration of the Variations includes both Halls‘ performance of the work on harpsichord and David Korevaar’s on piano.
The session was recorded July 14, 2012 in the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene, Oregon. Part of the Oregon Bach Festival’s Hinkle Distinguished Lecture series, it was underwritten by the Hinkle Charitable Foundation.
