With its meld of music and meaning, the Discovery Series has long been considered the heartbeat of the Festival. In his penultimate season as artistic director, Helmuth Rilling delves deep to explore the structure and symbolism that give Bach's telling of the last days of Christ its unrelenting power. The St. Matthew lecture concerts will be filmed in high definition as the next major work on the OBF's innovative DigitalBach website. The second lecture-concert begins with movement 18, where Jesus enters the garden of Gethsemane, and ends with movement 37, the chorale "Wer hat dich so geschlagen."
