As the members of Bach's congregation filed into the pews of the St. Thomas church on Good Friday 1727, little could they imagine that the music they were about to hear, composed by the cantor and cappellmeister in their employ, would become one of the towering statements of Western civilization. Bach's setting of the events in Matthew's gospel leading to the crucifixion goes beyond the profound drama of the unfolding events to illuminate the great bond of humanity it represents—a sharing of the gravest of sorrows and, ultimately, the promise of redemption.
