Bach proved his creative prowess in this set of thirty inventive and increasingly complex variations upon a simple aria, encompassing a remarkable range of styles and forms. Usually performed on solo keyboard, the Variations are heard here in a unique string arrangement by Dmitri Sitkovetsky that deepens their tonal colors and character, allowing Bach's genius to blossom fully. Led by Monica Huggett, founding director of the Juilliard School's early music program, the Portland Baroque Orchestra performs this concert with the crisp vitality of period instruments.
