The St. Matthew ticket buyers ad

  • Jul 11, 2012
Here's a copy of an ad that's running in the Register-Guard July 11-14. I sent an email to ticket buyers asking if they'd like to be included, and the response was overwhelming - and gratifying. I had room for the first 175, but appreciated the many more who offered their support. Thanks to all who answered the call. Sorry I couldn't get all of you in. A compelling chapter of the OBF's history will be written July 15 at 3 pm, when Helmuth Rilling leads a milestone performance of Bach's most profound masterwork.

Video: Tribute to an era of Bach and Rilling July 15

  • Jul 8, 2012
Helmuth Rilling, who, among his many accomplishments, supervised a recording of the composer's complete works on 172 CDs, knows the St. Matthew Passion as well as any conductor. With Helmuth's retirement following the 2013 OBF, Sunday's concert is the final time he will lead the St. Matthew in his role as artistic director. Over our history's twelve performances audiences have heard such world-renowned soloists as Arleen Auger, Sylvia McNair, Rod Gilfry, Ingeborg Danz, Maria Jette, Eric Owens, and Thomas Quasthoff, in most cases before they become classical music stars. Passion of the tango lures Powers

  • Jul 6, 2012
With a name perfectly suited for the Oregon Bach Festival’s 2012 theme “The Power and the Passion,” harmonica virtuoso Joe Powers, along with his international quintet and troupe of dancers, will perform an eclectic mix of traditional and modern tango in a four-city, OBF concert tour July 11-14. Demonstrating the inherent passion of such dances as the milonga, tango, and samba, the group launches the tour in Portland July 11, followed with Bend on July 12, Eugene on July 13, and Ashland on July 14. A native Oregonian, Powers was given a harmonica at age two and has pursued musical... read more

In his concert choral work A Child of our Time, composer Michael Tippett integrated American spirituals for powerful effect. In this July 4 rehearsal - just two days before the concert - conductor Matthew Halls and soprano Tamara Wilson took time to talk about the music before working on the spirituals as the rehearsal began. In preparation for the upcoming Oregon Bach Festival performances, conductor Matthew Halls sat down with OBF to share his thoughts on Tippett's "A Child of Our Time."

Matthew Halls on "A Child of our Time"

  • Jul 4, 2012
Future Artistic Director Matthew Halls graciously took the time to sit down with OBF to discuss his thoughts on conducting Tippett's masterpiece, A Child of our Time July 6-7. "The influence of Bach's St. Matthew Passion on "A Child of our Time" is fundamental to our understanding of Tippett's great masterpiece. The composer found in Bach's Passion a perfect structure with which to breathe new life into the contemplative form of the oratorio. "A Child of our Time" follows the traditional Bachian pattern of Chorus, Aria, Recitative and Congregational Chorale. Several of the virtuosos fugal choruses are instantly recognizable as being... read more
What would be his second career? How would he describe an ideal violin? What was it like to be on Dancing with the Stars? Joshua Bell answers your questions.

Five Questions with Joshua Bell

  • Jun 28, 2012
What would you ask Joshua Bell? That's what we wanted to know in our Facebook poll. The star violinist graciously agreed to sit with the OBF social media team right after his first rehearsal with the orchestra, Thursday afternoon. Thanks to Barbara Maier and Katy Dane for contributing questions. Q: You’re a busy busy man! What is the Joshua Bell time management system? JB: I have a fair amount of staff that helps me out. It’s not always easy... but I like the challenge and I enjoy being busy. I thrive on being busy. When I have downtime, I don’t know what to... read more
