Legendary artists, Collegium Vocale Gent, perform in Beall Hall this Sunday!
It’s not often that one of the great choral ensembles of Europe perform in Eugene, but the audience for Chamber Music @ Beall is in for an incredible experience this weekend, as legendary conductor Phillipe Herreweghe and soloists from the renowned Collegium Vocale Gent will perform the rarely heard Renaissance masterpiece Lagrime di San Pietro by Orlando Lassus. One of the original leaders in the historical performance field in the 1970s, Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale have released more than 80 recordings covering a full range of repertory from medieval to contemporary. They are known and loved for their ethereal sound while performing music from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, especially the works of JS Bach.
The performance on April 17th features one of the highest achievements in Renaissance polyphony, The Tears of St. Peter, a collection of 21 brief madrigals and motets on his grief following the crucifixion of Jesus and Peter’s denials. Completed just before his death, Lassus used the Lagrime as a summation of his work, utilizing seven voices to provide rich texture and a variety of styles that mesmerize the listener.
Symbolic of the quality of artists audiences have come to expect from Chamber Music @ Beall, Collegium Vocale Gent concludes the 2015-16 season with an astounding performance by top artists from around the world.
