Applications are now being accepted for the Oregon Bach Festival’s Master Class in Choral Orchestral Conducting. The class takes place June 21-July 10 in Eugene, Oregon and centers on the Magnificat and the St. Michael and Reformation cantatas of J.S. Bach.
At the heart of the Festival since the early 1970s, the master class is a 20-day immersion into the craft of conducting. Participants attend seminars in such areas as conducting technique, score study, and style and interpretation. They refine their technique in rehearsals under the tutelage of master teachers, and then conduct the Festival chorus and orchestra in the public performances of the OBF Discovery Series.
In 2011 the master teachers include Helmuth Rilling, the OBF artistic director and founder of the class; Jeffrey Kahane, a frequent guest conductor of the OBF and music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra; and Matthew Halls, director of the UK’s Retrospect early music ensemble and formerly associate director of the King’s Consort singers. Kahane and Halls are among the candidates to succeed Rilling as the OBF artistic leader.
Choral conductors Tom Davies of Cal Poly State University and Tim Sawyer of Northwestern College (St. Paul, MN) direct the class work.
In addition to the classroom activities, participants observe rehearsals and performances by OBF guest artists and conductors. In 2011 that list includes Marin Alsop, Anton Armstrong, Maria Guinand, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and Monica Huggett. Concert tickets are included in class fees.
The class is open by audition to as many as 12 conducting participants, who are required to provide detailed application materials.
The class is also open to auditors, who attend all classes but do not conduct, and who can attend for shorter stays within the 20-day schedule.
