Stephen Jaffe reflects on composition, OBF, and JSB

  • May 12, 2010
Stephen Jaffe of North Carolina was one of four composers commissioned to write a cantata in the manner of J.S. Bach for the 1996 project, "Bach and the Americas." The others were Osvaldo Golijov (South America), Linda Bouchard (Canada), and Robert Kyr, from Eugene. In a recently published interview by Tom Moore in Opera Today, Jaffe reflects on composition and his connections to the Oregon Bach Festival and J.S. Bach.
Although I have done a lot of vocal music, Songs of Turning is quite exceptional in my catalog. What I wanted to do in writing this piece, in terms of reflecting Bach’s tradition, was to have the audience, and the chorus, and the soloists to be involved in a story with resonance in real life--as Bach sometimes explored in his cantatas (especially those associated with pietism).
