If you're around a radio (or computer) on Saturday night and would like to add some Old Testament oomph to your holiday season, tune in to KWAX-FM at 8 pm Pacific Time for a broadcast of Mendelssohn's Elijah, taped July 11 as the final concert of the 2010 Oregon Bach Festival.
This was the one that reviewer Terry McQuilkin of The Register-Guard said "proved a satisfying and memorable closer." I'd go a little further and say it exploded off the stage, especially with Thomas Quasthoff as Elijah and the tremendous OBF chorus parting the heavens. Helmuth was in mesmerizing form.
