Our thanks to the audience members, Beall Hall production staff, and ticket sellers for bearing with us in an unexpected delay. Mechanical problems stranded two of the quartet members at the Denver airport and forced an hour delay of the concert. Violinist Joseph Lin and cellist Joel Krosnick landed in Eugene at 3:15, arrived at Beall Hall at 3:55, and took to the stage with colleagues Samuel Rhodes and Ronald Copes at 4:05 pm, without benefit of a warmup in the hall. From there they transfixed the audience with works by Mozart, Eliott Carter, and particularly, Beethoven. The crowd launched into a standing ovation immediately at the stunning conclusion of Beethoven's Grosse Fugue. Back onstage for an encore, Lin kindly thanked the audience members for their patience before leading his colleagues in a beautiful and serene slow movement from Haydn's quartet Opus 20, No. 1.
