Halls Bach CD is BBC Record of the Month

  • Nov 29, 2012
Matthew Halls and the Retrospect Ensemble’s recording of Bach’s Harpsichord Concertos is the BBC Music Magazine’s Record of the Month for December, earning a perfect five stars for both performance and recording. Reviewer George Pratt says that Halls and his ensemble, performing with one-to-a-part strings and perfectly matched harpsichord, transport the listener back to the days of Zimmerman’s Leipzig coffee house, where these pieces were likely first performed. “Halls’ sparkling articulation generates enormous exuberance,” Pratt writes. “All in all...irresistible.” The magazine’s three-page coverage includes an interview with Halls on the challenges of playing Bach and capsule reviews of three other Retrospect recordings on the Linn Records label. Visit the Linn Records site to purchase the CD, listen to preview cuts, and read more review excerpts. The BBC Music Magazine is available in the US at bookstores such as Barnes & Noble, or by paid subscription through the magazine’s website. Halls, the Oregon Bach Festival's artistic director designate, will be the featured harpsichord soloist in Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in a four-concert tour with Monica Huggett and the Portland Baroque Orchestra July 9-12 during the 2013 OBF.
