Bass soloist defies expectations

But that’s one of the unexpected pleasures when violinist Monica Huggett and Portland Baroque Orchestra chamber soloists join Nigerian-Irish double bass virtuoso Chi-chi Nwanoku for music featuring the instrument in a uniquely soloistic role. Today's ChamberMusic@Beall concert by the Szymanowski Quartet of Poland was elegant, subtle, deeply textured, nuanced, and an overwhelming crowd pleaser.  Arriving in Eugene Saturday from Hannover, Germany, on the start of  a West Coast tour, the group showed no signs of jet lag in an exquisite two hours that featured quartets by Mendelssohn and Dvorak not usually heard in these types of concerts. Master Class deadline approaching

The deadline to apply for the 2013 conducting master class is approaching. All required audition material must arrive at the OBF office by February 15. Up to 12 selected conductors will be notified by March 1 with the entire roster set by mid-March. From June 27 – July 10, the Master Class in Conducting offers conductors the unique opportunity to further develop their craft while studying under the direction of world-renowned Bach expert Helmuth Rilling and a staff of distinguished professionals.
